At Supernova Furniture and Sleep Gallery, we’ve spent a lot of time over the last few months helping to increase your Mattress IQ. Hopefully, today’s topic will leave you just a little bit wiser about your bed, or more specifically about your bed frame. Chances are you think even less about the frame your bed sits on than you do about the mattress itself. Surprisingly, the frame you choose can have a huge impact on your sleep health especially if you aren’t sleeping alone.

Sleeping Side by Side

Each of us has our own unique sleep needs. Your body size, sleep position, and your personal preferences, as well as those of your partner, are key factors. Each factor needs to be considered before choosing a bed. Options like adjustable bed frames can help even out comfort levels for couples. If you're a side sleeper, but your partner sleeps on their stomach, the bed that’s perfect for you could be miserable for them.

Adjustable Bed Frames…

When we say adjustable bed, don’t let it conjure up images of hospital beds or your grandparent’s bedroom. Here’s the thing, no matter your age, or level of health, an adjustable foundation might just be the best bedding decision you’ll make in your life. Adjustable bed frames are just as much about lifestyle enhancement as they are about ergonomic sleep positions. Do you sit up in bed to watch TV or type on your laptop? Does a snoring partner keep you awake at night? An adjustable bed has your back (literally)! There are no downsides to getting an adjustable base, but there are a lot of ups!

  • Adjustable beds make it easier to do things like read a book, use a laptop, or watch TV in bed. (P.S. No, we don’t recommend doing those last two things. Sleep experts say that using electronics and watching TV in bed can lower the quality of your sleep).
  • If you’re a back sleeper, raising your feet and head up a bit, can help alleviate pressure on the lower spine.
  • If you have acid reflux or snoring problems, elevating your head can help reduce them.
  • Leg elevation can help with circulation issues, as well as healing from sports injuries like sprained ankles.
  • For those of you in the older age brackets, raising the head up can make it easier to get in and out of bed easily.

As If That Wasn’t Enough

There are a lot of factors that go into determining what the “right” mattress is. Everything from sleep position, to bodyweight, can affect the type of support needed. Especially if you’re sleeping in tandem. No matter how similar your partner and you are, your sleep needs will never be exactly the same. Adjustable bed frames allow for two separate mattresses. Did you know that two XL twins combined are the same size as a King size mattress? If the mattress you have is only a good fit for one partner, tossing and turning could keep the other one up at night. Interrupted sleep from a partner’s movements is the biggest problem for couples who share a bed. Consider, that by choosing two XL twins you could both have the perfect mattress for your individual needs while sleeping in the same bed!
